At the ripe age of 24, Giulia Negri embarked on an exhilarating journey by taking the reins of a well-established Barolo estate. As the latest descendant in a lineage of grape growers stretching back 150 years in the Langhe commune of La Morra, the challenge was irresistible to her. After completing her studies in management and biology, and having been profoundly inspired by a trip to Burgundy where she refined her palate, Giulia returned to La Morra with an unyielding determination to unlock the secrets of crafting exceptional wines in her beloved Piemonte.
Nestled in the heart of the Serradenari cru in La Morra, the highest point within the Barolo zone, where vineyards ascend to a breathtaking 536 meters above sea level, Giulia relentlessly pursues her dream of fashioning Barolo wines infused with the elegance of Burgundy. Interestingly, she inherited small plots of Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, which her father had planted on the estate's cooler, north-facing slopes, allowing her to pay homage to the magnificent wines of the Cote d'Or through the lens of Piemontese.
However, Nebbiolo reigns supreme in these parts, and from Serradenari emerges a Barolo of regal distinction. The elevated altitude, combined with a mosaic of soils found nowhere else in the Langhe, provides the ideal canvas for Giulia to craft Barolos that intertwine delicate floral notes and graceful fruit with a profound mineral essence. With finely woven, closely-knit tannins, her wines captivate with their youthful allure, yet they possess the structure for substantial aging in the bottle.
Upon assuming leadership of the estate, Giulia was greeted by a cellar filled with diminutive Burgundian barriques. After extensive exploration throughout the Langhe and drawing wisdom from some of Barolo's most revered vintners, it became evident that large casks were essential for preserving Nebbiolo's distinctive tension and enigmatic vitality. With an unwavering commitment to expressing the authenticity of terroir, she progressively replaced the smaller barrels with grand botti. Her artisanal philosophy and dedication to traditional winemaking extend to sustainable viticulture, the rejection of commercial yeasts and additives, manual grape harvesting, minimal filtration, and extended yet gentle cellar macerations.
Though Giulia, affectionately known as "Barologirl," may be the newcomer on the La Morra block, tasting her wines reveals a masterful touch and profound respect for tradition that already situates her wines among the timeless classics of the region. We wholeheartedly encourage you to include a bottle of Giulia's exquisite Barolo in your next selection, and we are absolutely thrilled for you to discover why we eagerly welcomed her domaine into our portfolio
