The quaint hamlet of Blagny, nestled in the hills between Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault in the Cote d'Or in Burgundy, is where you'll find Domaine Comtesse de Cherisey. You might have come across the name "Blagny" before, perhaps attached to a bottle of premier cru Meursault-Blagny, or even the increasingly rare Blagny rouge. Monks were the first settlers here, planting vines in the 14th century. This almost enchanting, timeless corner of the world boasts a unique microclimate, with slightly different average temperatures, exposure, and soil compared to the rest of Burgundy. In our humble opinion, our dear friend and vigneron, Laurent Martelet, crafts the most captivating masterpieces that emanate from this terroir. Laurent bottles the wines we import under the Comtesse de Cherisey label, named in honor of his wife Helene's mother, who inherited their vines and passed them on to Helene, who works alongside Laurent.
All of the de Cherisey premier cru vines are at least 60 years old, encircling their ancient cellar in the Hameau de Blagny. Their Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Hameau de Blagny comes from vines on the south side of Blagny, level with the village, just above Puligny Truffieres. It's a wine that marries the power and richness of Meursault with the delicate finesse of Puligny. Laurent's Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chalumaux hails from vines just below Blagny, between the aforementioned Truffieres and Meursault-Perrieres. If you were a Chardonnay vine, it wouldn't be a bad place to lay down your roots. The wine is laden with white limestone, offering a supremely fine, intensely focused white Burgundy, very Puligny-esque, brimming with minerality. While it may not boast the same renown as its neighbors, it certainly deserves to. The Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru La Genelotte originates from a vineyard just north of Blagny, on the Meursault side, high on the slope above the village. This wine is a robust, timeless, long-lived Meursault. The Genelotte vineyard is also a monopole, meaning Laurent and Helene are the sole proprietors.
