The first of the two new village cuvees is Domaine Duroche Gevrey-Chambertin 2021. It is a blend of regular Gevrey-Chambertin village lieux-dits (Le Clos, Les Champs, En Vosne), and Les Champeaux 1er Cru, and it creates a delightful example of Gevrey generosity. This has notable intensity and vividness, yet is delicate with generous notes of wild strawberries and a hint of raspberries. A sensual, emotional wine, and I adore it.

Under Pierre Duroches stewardship this domaine has risen to become one of the most heralded estates in Gevrey Chambertin. The former mountain climber is widely considered amongst the most considered, progressive and talented producers in the Cote dOr - both for his painstaking vineyard work and his impeccable lightness of touch in the winery.
The measure of a domaine is often the quality of their village wine and Duroches 2021 Gevrey Chambertin is a stunner.
Duroches northerly Gevrey vineyards, on the Brochon side of the village, were devastated by the April 2021 frost. A couple of months later the same sector was hit by hail. Pierre was beset by mildew, oidium and botrytis. In the end, the vines managed an average yield of just 20 hectolitres per hectare in 2021, yet the Duroche wines are beyond impressive:

Faced with non-viable yields, Pierre Duroche chose not to produce some of his regular crus in 2021. As a result his Gevrey Chambertin 2021 is an assemblage including the lieux dits of Le Clos, Champ and En Vosne. In addition, the production of 1er Cru Les Champeaux was too small to bottle so Pierre blended it into his decidedly superior village 2021.
Im thrilled to have amassed more than 30 cases of this stellar 2021 village wine for our Fete du Bourgogne. So far, every offer in this series has featured Grand Cru wines commanding Grand Cru prices - Thibault Liger-Belairs Richebourg, Philippe Colins Chevalier Montrachet and a host of top crus from Coquard-Loison-Fleurot. Top class Burgundy is not the sole preserve of the Grand Crus so Im delighted to feature this beautiful village Gevrey to close out week one of our festival.
