Amos Baneres is the hero of a thrilling personal journey that sees a tired pharmacist, weary of the mundane routine in urban Barcelona, transform into a daring winemaker in the remote village of Penedes. The ancestral village of San Martin Sarroca cradles the family vineyard, which Amos rejuvenates, culminating in his triumphant first harvest in 2011. His adventurous spirit led him to cross paths with a Cava producer for the family business, celebrating its centenary in 2020, both seeking fresh challenges. Together with Alex Ruiz Masach, Amos Baneres founded Els Vinyerons, a partnership bursting with excitement to amplify his unique terroir vision.
Amos Baneres's family estate spans 5.5 hectares in the Penedes region, just a stone's throw from Barcelona, renowned for crafting Spain's finest classic method bubbles. The Serra d'Ordal frames the Mediterranean horizon, while vineyards ascend the mountain slopes, reaching Tarragona, at elevations of 300 to 400 meters above sea level. The soil's limestone structure, coated with clay, thrives on sea breezes, fostering a particularly dry climate conducive to "dry-farming" without irrigation. Embracing organic principles and biodynamic practices, Amos cherishes each vine, some over 50 years old, including the white varietals Xarel-lo, Macabeu, Parellada, Listan, and the black varietals Garnacha and Villarjego.
With unbridled enthusiasm, Amos Baneres conducts winery operations, prioritizing the preservation of raw materials. Chemical additives, filtrations, clarifications, and sulfur dioxide additions are eschewed in favor of spontaneous fermentations, often occurring after direct pressing in a variety of containers. Temperature control is embraced, while aging takes place joyfully in oak barrels and amphorae, nestled in a quaint shed adjacent to his homestead.
